Anonymous works are those whose composer or author is unknown and which are usually transmitted in manuscript copies or in published sheet music and whose time of composition is usually known, at least approximately. Examples include Gregorian chants of the Medieval period and many other sacred or secular works by unknown composers. We also use ‘anonymous’ for works which were composed by a band or ensemble if a specific composer’s name is unknown.
